About Prosthetic Eyes

A prosthetic eye is an ocular prosthesis which restores the volume and appearance of a missing eye. At Northwest Eye Design, each prosthetic eye is meticulously handcrafted, using the patient as a model. This personalized approach results in precise color matching, maximized movement and a natural looking prosthetic eye. Using advanced impression techniques and precision sculpting, we focus on matching the contours of the eye and eyelids, movement, and overall comfort of the prosthesis.

Our design process combines detailed artistry with layering techniques to duplicate the depth, color, and patterns of the natural eye. Leveraging our skill and experience, we aim to greatly improve the appearance, self-esteem, and sense of wholeness of our patients.

Designed To Look Natural

From the smooth acrylic contours to the beautifully handcrafted iris, every detail in our prosthetic eye combines symmetry-inspired precision and meticulous artistry.

Optical Surface
Durable acrylic protects and magnifies the artwork and accentuates the anatomical features of the eye for a life-like experience.
Vessels & Sclera
Vessels are duplicated with red silk thread. The sclera is tinted with dry pigments to match the surface patterns and colors of the eye.
Acrylic Cornea
A clear acrylic dome, similar to a cornea, brings up the depth and magnifies the detail of the iris.
Hand Painted Iris
Pigment is hand painted, layer by layer, using color and pattern to create the natural texture of the iris.
Iris Button
The first layers of pigmentation lay the groundwork for the detailed depth and artwork to come.
Prosthetic Form
The prosthesis is made of white medical-grade acrylic, providing a smooth surface which accurately fits to the ocular tissue.
Silicone Impression
The impression captures the curvature, volume, and lid contours of the socket and allows for movement and comfort.

How Do Children Cope with Eye Loss?

We feel very privileged to walk alongside our youngest patients and their families. Eye loss is very difficult at any age, but especially for a child and their family. Northwest Eye Design is a safe place for kids to meet other prosthetic eye wearers and often life-long friendships are forged in the hallways and waiting room between families with so much in common.
